On this episode of Randomness with Heath and Josh, the guys sit down with photographer, homesteader, and fellow Temple, Texas native Josh Quinn for an incredible conversation about walking away from everything and starting over in the Rocky Mountains.
Josh takes us back to his early days as a photojournalist for the Temple Daily Telegram, where an unexpected Associated Press photography award gave him the motivation to pursue photography at an even higher level. But after facing some serious personal struggles, including struggles with alcohol, Josh eventually made a life-changing decision—he simply packed up the essentials, grabbed a tent, and headed to Colorado to live “off the grid.”
Near Trinidad, Colorado, Josh began building a completely different life for himself in the mountains. He shares stories about some of his wild encounters with wildlife, the challenges of surviving in the wilderness, and the unlikely friendships he made along the way—including an elderly couple who also homesteads nearby. The neighbors quickly became friends who look out for one another and regularly share breakfast together.
Josh also explains how the harsh Colorado winters eventually forced him to build a small cabin to protect himself from the cold and the dangers of nature. Through it all, photography remained a huge part of his life, and he talks about his passion for capturing the incredible beauty of the mountains and the surrounding wilderness.
From cooking meals in the ground over an open fire with the Rocky Mountains as his backdrop to learning how to survive with very little, Josh’s story is one of stepping away from the life he knew and discovering a new path in the wild.
It’s a story about photography, survival, friendship, second chances, and what happens when you decide to just… leave.
